A Song that Makes No Sense but also Makes Perfect Sense

She said "I know what it's like to be dead,

I know what it is to be sad."

And she's making me feel like I've never been born.

Have you ever heard a song that resonates with you even though you don't really get it? The song "She Said She Said" by The Beatles is a little baffling, and probably means different things to different people. I think that's what they wanted. What if there isn't always a concrete answer?

For most of my life, I have thought a lot in black and white, not much room for gray. Things were either one way or another, and there wasn't much room for the middle. You often hear people say "I had it all figured out when I was 20;" and looking back on myself a couple decades ago, that is definitely true. Turning 40 this year is actually really exciting to me but it's weird because I have more questions now than I did back then. And questions that are easy to answer, like the meaning of life, what the afterlife is like, ya know, super simple. :)

So back to the song. It actually doesn't make perfect sense. And I think that's on purpose- especially if you know much about that era of The Beatles. But the first line reminds me of those stories you hear of people who have died and come back, describing a great sense of peace and indefinable beauty. Perhaps The Beatles were pondering the same big questions that come as you get older. Cool how even 60 years ago, people were thinking some of the same things we do now.

I've always thought that after we pass away and move on to the next phase when everything makes sense. We won't get it now. If we get too bent out of shape on the details, we will make ourselves crazy. If you listen to the song, they don't ever really figure out what the lady is talking about, but remember being young and the freedom that came with that stage in life.

So it makes sense that it doesn't make sense because life doesn't always make sense. Does that make sense?

As I get older, there is more room for the gray area, no pun intended. I guess we'll never have all the answers. But it's fun to think about.
